Trouble Bubble

After Emberly and Max left Olive’s house, they walked back to Emberly’s house.

“So what do you think is wrong with Olive?” Max asked after a while.

“I don’t know. But to be honest, whatever she did, it’s messing with her powers. It’s probably the reason she’s sick,” Emberly replied, looking up at the autumn-colored leaves hanging on the branches above.

“Yeah, you’re probably right,” Max said, kicking a small pebble on the sidewalk.

“Is it me, or is it kind of weird that Mr. D knows your dad?” Emberly asked, looking at him. “And now that I think about it, even my mom knew you last name.” She frowned. “Isn’t that kind of weird?”

“Not really. My family is really well known in this town for some reason. And my dad knows tons of people, practically everyone in town. It happens all the time. Nothing new for me.”

“Oh,” Emberly said, stepping over some leaves, but the thought didn’t leave her head. “So, do you want to stay for a little while? My mom’s home now. We could practice some magic, maybe?”

“Uh, probably not. Last time I stayed too long my mom got upset at me. Plus, it is going to be dinner time soon, and my mom would ground me for life me if I miss it,” Max said, staring ahead at the cement path.

“Okay.” They didn’t talk much after that. Finally, they got to Emberly’s house. “Thanks for walking me home.”

“No problem. I left my bike here anyway.” Max lifted his bike from behind a bush. He took his helmet from the bike and put it on. “See you later!”

With that he sped down the driveway, leaving Emberly alone by the door. Emberly tested the knob. To her surprise, it was unlocked, which was very unlike her mom; she always locked the house. Emberly walked in, an eerie feeling settling in the pit of her stomach as she locked the door behind her.

“Mom? I’m home,” she called, looking around. It was perfectly quiet and dim from the lack of evening sunlight. The house was empty, but her mom’s door was slightly open, a strange pink light leaking out from the crack underneath. “Mom, are you there?” She carefully walked up to the door, gripping her amulet in her left hand and reaching for the knob with her right. Then she heard her mom’s voice and froze.

“What do you mean it’s time?!” her mom snapped, making Emberly flinch. Her mom never yelled.

“You know what I mean, Alastriona,” a male voice responded calmly. Emberly looked through the slim crevice. She saw the orb from before. It was in bloom, brilliant pink light escaping form the top, forming a large wobbly bubble with a blurry image of what Emberly guessed was the owner of the voice.

“That doesn’t mean I have to agree with it!” her mom countered, turning her back to him, and staring at the book-self, gripping her elbows as if trying to hold herself together. “She’s not ready. I’ m not ready.” She said the last part to herself.
